Skyscrapers and Structures at the Museum of London Docklands.
It’s been quite intensive day, but very successful one. With three groups of children: two year 4 classes of 30 children from Mora Primary and 19 year 5 children from Tangmere Primary Academy it was a busy day!
All three groups were very enthusiastic and engaged, experimenting with forms and materials, creating great engineering solutions and good designs. Some worked independently, others choose to work in pairs showing good cooperative skills and great teamwork.
All young constructors showed good level of focus and perseverance with their tasks.
I have talked about elements of structure used in buildings and their function.
We had six volunteers, demonstrating relation between columns, beams and truss.
Next challenge of cutting out photos of London skyscrapers and arranging them in order from tallest to smallest gave children idea of how tall they are.
We have discussed challenges of weight of the materials used, balance and geometry required to make the design more solid and stable.
It was very satisfying that with few hints children managed to come with some very good problem solving solutions to “wobbly” structure issues.
Great work everyone!
