Skyscrapers & Structures @Museum of London Docklands

Today’s  workshop was the first in series I have prepared in partnership with the Museum of London Docklands.
With an enthusiastic group of year 3 and 4 children from Mayflower Primary we explored London high buildings, comparing their shapes and sizes.
Following brief theory of building elements, naming key parts of structure, children took more hands on approach at engineering. They have learned, that balance and gravity can vastly influence the design and tried to apply that knowledge to create their own structures.
With good teamwork spirit they helped each other and shared the resources, experimenting with different forms of structure children overcame most of the engineering challenges.
At the end of the workshop, in competitive spirit we have measured all the creations, learning how to use measuring tape. The competition for the TALLEST design was quite fierce with structures exceeding 50 cm. Some bent the rules a bit with creating the LONGEST building, with some reaching over 100 cm!.
Children have taken the whole box filled with structures back to school to share with their friends and teachers.
Few students promised to work on really talll scyscrapers for London in the future.
Great work everyone!
