Bridges…

We had couple of exciting workshops this week, putting our engineering hats on and designing our own…

bridges!

Children faced the challenge of spanning a bridge across paper river, using paper straws, paper, sellotape and masking tape. They have tried various types of bridge constructions, creating their favourite designs.

We got some great constructions, some joined up together into a really, really huge bridge, almost as long as the width of the room!

Great work everyone!

The world’s longest bridge is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China, part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The cable-stayed bridge, which opened in June 2011, spans 165 kilometers (102.4 miles).

The Vasco da Gama Bridge, it is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts that spans the Tagus River in Parque das Nações in Lisbon. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts),with a total length of 12.3 kilometres.  The bridge was opened in 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World’s Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
