Skyscrapers C 1-2

Right after half term we had a couple of lively workshops with Year 5 classes from Carpenters Primary School, Stratford, E15

Children have studied some of the visible elements of structure in the Museum room. We compared it to modern buildings surrounding the site, the materials used now and then, when the warehouse was erected in 1802. Kids have learned about origins, purpose and transformation of  Docklands area.

Children have completed the task of comparing shapes and heights of some of London’s tallest buildings, noting various forms used in their designs.

Then they were challenged to construct the tallest structure, using toothpicks and cubes of foam.

Over the course of design session, they have set into teams, learning about balance, stability and good teamwork.

Some structures were formed and re-form,ed, then completely transformed creating entirely new designs!

Few teams decided to join forces together and merge their models together.

Final results were good. Some structures were more stable than others, but they all taught the kids about challenges of creating a balanced and solid structures.

Well done everyone!
